Down the river there's a ship will carry us

The summer of my eighteenth year I became reclusive.

At least to the extent that I could, being paid to play a public character twelve hours per day. It wasn't a hard role, given that I'd played for the last several seasons. But I'd grown tired of it, and by being reclusive saw a disturbing upswing in my popularity. The campers who'd been before spread rumors about me, and my compatriots encouraged them to exaggerate me to wild proportions.

For a beautiful few weeks I lived in the minds of people better than I was.
