Before me plays the endless film

At one point in my life, I was seeing four or five movies a week. This lasted about two and a half years. Date a girl with an Entertainment Weekly subscription and it might happen to you too.

That was X1. When the dust had settled, I realized that we went to the movies as a way of being together and apart at the same time. Holding hands and staring away from ourselves. Suddenly a lot of those movies had to be reconsidered.

Rounders was the first. I watched it during the unpleasant time I still lived in her house. We'd seen it in the theater together, and it really only came to mean something to me in the aftermath.

Summer of Sam was second. As the fledgling FX network tried to score viewership, they played it the first summer that I watched them. I hadn't liked it in the theater, but now it struck chords in me.

Tonight, in the annoying territory of sobriety I watched another movie we dismissed back then. Parts of it were startlingly acute.

So I'm declaring a general amnesty for movies I saw between 1997 and 2001. Olly-olly oxen-free.
