I thought about walking home.
It's about seven hundred miles back to my home range. If I walked sixteen hours a day, it would take me ten days or so following the highway. It would be a hard walk, but I think I could do it. Abandon my rental car, hotel room, luggage. Walk away and head north.
Not that I'd make it. Some state trooper would see me eventually, and there would be questions I couldn't answer about why I had to leave. I don't think they'd believe my reasons; friends aside, these are not my people. This is not where I belong.
