In the cafeteria today, having gotten my entree and salad I stopped to grab compostable utensils. They were just being restocked, and I darted a hand in to grab a fork. "Pardon me," I said, smiling.
She smiled back. "I haven't seen you in here in a while."
To the best of my knowledge we've never spoken a word to each other before. In my best imitation of people, I smiled again and said something banal about working hard and keeping my head down for a bit. We both laughed and smiled and I walked off.
The office is now something like five hundred people. I'll concede that I dress something outside the norm, for the building or for the region, but I don't like to think of myself as memorable. I don't really know how to take it.
